Claude Personal Finance connects to your bank accounts via Plaid

Anthropic announced Personal Finance for Claude on Thursday, a feature that lets you connect bank and credit card accounts through Plaid and ask Claude questions about your money. According to TechCrunch, access is read-only, so Claude cannot move, manage or invest funds. It is rolling out in beta this week to Pro, Max and Ultra subscribers in the US.

What’s new

  • Spending overviews. Ask “where did my money go this month” and Claude adds up spending across connected accounts and sorts it into categories such as rent and utilities, food and drink, and shopping.
  • Follow-up questions. The Verge reports that you can also ask which bills are left before payday, whether you can afford a bigger purchase such as a holiday trip, and how much you could save each month.
  • Problem spotting. TechCrunch says Claude analyzes transactions to flag duplicate charges, unexpected fees and bills that keep rising, and it can explain terms like APR and calculate how much interest you paid over the past year.
  • No ads. Anthropic’s blog post, as quoted by TechCrunch, says Personal Finance has “no ads or sponsored recommendations” and does not offer credit cards, loans or savings accounts of its own.

What Claude can see

Plaid handles the connection, so according to The Verge Claude does not see your banking passwords. Both outlets list the same data: the bank’s name, account names and types, the last four digits of the account number, balances, credit limits and up to two years of transaction history. TechCrunch adds that conversations in the Personal Finance hub are not used to train Anthropic’s models.

Anthropic says the feature is not designed to give investment advice. Its announcement ends by saying that for bigger money decisions people are best served by Claude working alongside licensed professionals and regulated firms, and that it wants to hear from banks, wealth managers and financial services companies about making that possible.

What it means for developers

There is no API or developer announcement in the coverage we read: Personal Finance is a feature of the Claude app for consumer plans, and nothing we found says it is available through the Claude API or as a connector you can build on. If you build finance tools, the pattern is worth noting: a read-only bank connection through an aggregator like Plaid, a narrow set of fields shared with the model, and an explicit statement that it will not move money.

If you are building something similar, the same questions apply to your own product: which fields the model actually needs, how long you keep transaction history, and whether conversations feed training. For a look at how another lab is pitching a specialised model with guardrails, see our post on GPT-6 Cyber.

How it compares

Both outlets note that Anthropic is following OpenAI here. TechCrunch says ChatGPT introduced a similar feature in May that also lets users connect financial accounts and ask about spending patterns and long-term planning, and The Verge says that feature also connects through Plaid. TechCrunch frames Claude as playing catch-up.

Availability

Beta, US only, Pro, Max and Ultra plans, rolling out this week. We could not open Anthropic’s own announcement when writing this, so details above come from TechCrunch and The Verge, which quote it; check Anthropic’s post for the final word on limits and supported banks.
