OpenAI reportedly valued at $1.25 trillion in new funding round
OpenAI is reportedly raising a new round of funding at a valuation of $1.25 trillion, according to The Verge. That is well above the $852 billion it was valued at when its previous round closed in March. OpenAI has not publicly confirmed the round or its terms, so every figure here comes from press reports.
What’s new
- Valuation: $1.25 trillion. One report citing CNBC described it as a pre-money valuation, meaning before the new money is added.
- Previous round: In March OpenAI closed a round with $122 billion in committed capital at an $852 billion valuation, according to The Next Web.
- Targets moved over time: Reports in September put the target at about $1.2 trillion, then about $1.5 trillion, and Bloomberg-sourced coverage described a $30 billion raise at around $1.4 trillion. The $1.25 trillion figure is lower than that last target.
- Not confirmed: We could not verify the size of the money raised so far in this round, so we do not give a number.
The IPO question
Sam Altman has said that “right now would be an ill-advised moment to go public”, as quoted by The Next Web, and reports say the company expects to list later. A private round at this size is a way to raise capital while staying private.
The Verge frames the round against Anthropic, which it describes as nearing its own IPO. Reports differ on whether Anthropic has already filed, so check Anthropic’s own announcements before relying on that.
What it means for developers
A valuation is not a product release. Nothing in these reports changes the OpenAI API, its pricing or its models today. The practical points are about the vendor you build on:
- Funding capacity: Fresh capital usually pays for compute and model training, which is what ships later as new models and API features. The reports do not say how OpenAI will spend this round.
- Vendor risk: A company valued at over a trillion dollars is unlikely to disappear, but the target has moved several times, which is a reminder that financing conditions change. Keep your integration behind a thin abstraction so you can switch providers if prices or terms move.
- Public-market scrutiny: If OpenAI and Anthropic do list, expect more public disclosure about margins, compute costs and customer concentration. That would tell developers more about how sustainable current API pricing is.
How it compares
$1.25 trillion is about 47% above the $852 billion from March, using those two reported figures. It is also below the $1.4 trillion reported as the target for a $30 billion raise earlier.
